About Ramesh Dahal

Parents: Late Pashupati Prasad Dahal / Late Bal Kumari Dahal Occupation: Lyricist / Researcher Education: MSc Environmental Science & Policy / MA Sociology Ramesh Dahal is a successful lyricist and songwriter who has been contributing to the Nepali music industry for almost three decades. His skills, knowledge, and creativity have established him as a prominent lyricist in contemporary Nepali songwriting. Ramesh was born to Late Pashupati Prasad Dahal and Late Balkumari Dahal in Mainapokhari, Dolakha, in 1978 (Nepal Samacharpatra, August 8, 2021). He has been active in writing since his teenage years. However, his first song, “Pheri Timro Samjhanale,” was recorded in 2000, composed by Ganesh Parajuli and sung by Yasoda Parajuli. Ramesh’s persistence allowed him to learn and grow before his first song was officially recorded. He successfully built networks with many senior artists prior to his breakthrough. Since then, both senior musicians and new-generation music workers have continued producing songs based on his outstanding lyrics for commercial purposes (Music Khabar.com, January 1, 2020). His profound creations have earned him wide popularity. He believes that writing meaningful lyrics serves both music and Nepali literature, as a song is a form of audible history representing the cultural practices of its time. As a lyricist and songwriter, Ramesh contributes significantly to both Nepali music and literature. Ramesh has received several national-level music awards and honors. In the nationwide modern song competitions organized by Radio Nepal in 2009 and 2020, he received awards, including cash prizes, for writing outstanding lyrics. Following these recognitions, Radio Nepal promoted him to Grade ‘A’. Likewise, the Lyricists’ Association of Nepal granted him a national-level award, further elevating his reputation. He has won the 8th Music Khabar Music Award, Sagarmatha Music Award, Industrial Peace Nepal Music Award, National Capital Music Award, Natyashwor Music Award, and Genius Music Award. Receiving prestigious national awards from Radio Nepal and the Lyricists’ Association of Nepal, along with invitations to serve as an expert lyricist in national-level award programs, reflects his prominence in the field (Vimochan Monthly, February–March 2022). Ramesh writes lyrics addressing various social issues to raise awareness. His song “Chaupadi,” composed and sung by Sophia Thapa, appeals to society to end the social taboo of isolating girls and women during menstruation and maternity—a practice still present in parts of Nepal (Nava Kshitiz Weekly, Asauj 31, 2079). Similarly, the song “Kahile Banla Hamro Gauma Motor Gudne Bato,” sung by Ananda Karki and Mandabi Tripathi and composed by Shakti Ballav Shrestha, highlights the concerns of remote communities regarding infrastructure, social justice, and equity in power and politics (The Himalaya Times, October 13, 2022). His song “Aphai Hidne Bhirko Bato,” for which he received the “Song of the Year Award 2020” from the Lyricists’ Association of Nepal, encourages youth to take initiative for national prosperity rather than depending on others (The Business Journal, September 2022). Ramesh also writes lyrics to advocate for the protection of girls from violence and sexual harassment. For example, “Bata Bharika Tagara,” composed by Danney Niroula and sung by Sirjana Guragain, raises awareness about acid attack victims in Nepal and India. Radio Nepal awarded him for this outstanding lyric in its Nationwide Modern Song Competition in 2020. The same award has previously been granted to lyricists such as Kiran Kharel, Dinesh Adhikari, Buddh Bir Lama, Dr. Naba Raj Lamsal, Ramesh Chhitiz, Gyandendra Gadal, Tika Chamling, and Mahesh Acharya. Ramesh also writes for patriotism and national integrity. His song “Janani Janma Bhumi,” composed by Shakti Ballav Shrestha and sung by Sumit Khadka, encourages respect for democracy and the rule of law and motivates people to build a corruption-free society. Listeners appreciate Ramesh’s songs because they reflect the lives and stories of common people. Renowned music professionals agree that his lyrics are simple in structure yet symbolic, unique, and folk-inspired. As a commercial lyricist, he also writes jingles, school rhymes, and logo songs for business houses (Arthik National Daily, September 28, 2022). Although Ramesh began writing poems at an early age, he eventually focused on songwriting. He has published two song collections: Baluwako Ghar (2005) and Hiunko Phool (2018). His third anthology of lyrical poems is forthcoming (Gorkhapatra National Daily, May 25, 2019). What distinguishes Ramesh in the music industry is his ability to address social issues while maintaining entertainment value. Having traveled to almost every part of Nepal and spent years abroad, he has gained deep insight into diverse cultures and ways of life (Taja Khabar Weekly, October 11, 2022). Experience Ramesh Dahal is an active lyricist in the Nepali music industry and continues to work for the advancement of Nepali songs and music. During his more than two-and-a-half decades in the industry, he has contributed to over three dozen music albums. He has written more than a thousand songs, with hundreds recorded. He has published two anthologies of lyrics (Baluwako Ghar, 2005; Hiunko Phool, 2018). He writes across modern, pop, and patriotic genres. Creating social awareness through songs remains his priority, while he is equally engaged in producing entertaining music (Madhyanha National Daily, September 26, 2021).
